World Skate January Newsletter

World Skate January Newsletter

Hello and welcome to what will no doubt be a very glad end to the month of January for pretty much everyone.
Although the armpit of the year is naturally enough quiet on the events front, it has not been a month without consequence on the institutional front here at World Skate.
Foremost among those endeavours was the announcement of eleven new judges passing their Level 1 qualifications in World Skate’s Judging Certification Program, a vital stepping-stone on their road to becoming internationally-sanctioned judges eligible to adjudicate WST events, Continental Championships and so on.
On the development front, we also checked in with the nascent skate scene in Saudi Arabia after the successful completion of their first- ever Judging Seminar featuring our own Martin Karas and Dani Lebron.
Staying with the theme of emerging skateboarding nations, we celebrated Ireland joining the World Skateboarding Tour by interviewing their first-ever WST competitor Ethan Hardiman-Doody (WSR Ranking: 99th).
Competing against Ethan at last September’s WST Ostia World Championship was Denmark’s Viktor Solmunde (WSR Ranking: 6th), who hails from one of Europe’s oldest transition-skating lineages.
Arisa Trew talks 900’s!
January also saw us release our spotlight feature on Australia’s mighty Arisa Trew (WSR Ranking: 5th) and her history-making 900 breakthrough.
Finally, we introduced a new series called Currents which looks at stories from within the WST, starting with the Spanish Park Skateboarding Team’s Basque contingent.
So: that’s Ireland, Australia, Spain, Denmark and Saudi Arabia all covered in the last 30 days- we hope you enjoy this recap, and join us in another 30 days’ time for our next summary of all that is happening within our wide world of skateboarding!
