World Skate Games 2024: Downhill Skateboarding And Street Luge
The Downhill Skateboard and Street Luge disciplines put on an incredible show last week in the gorgeous town of Tortoreto in the Abruzzo region of Italy.
The week started out with torrential rain, canceling a portion of the first practice day briefly covering the track in mud and debris.
A wet race was not to be, though, and once the sun came out riders enjoyed immaculate weather and pristine race conditions for the remainder of the event.
After two days of practice on the course, the event went to time trials.
Not only would the time trials winners receive medals, the times would also serve as the qualification times to seed the race bracket.
Those who didn’t put down a fast enough time did not make it into the final race on Saturday.
In Men’s Street Luge, two time world champion Mickel Echegary Diez went fastest with Ryan Farmer and Abdil Mahdzan hot on his heels.
The women’s Street Luge category saw one of the largest fields of participants in the history of the sport.
Rose Hill took the top time, with Pastor Loreline and Charlotte Farges grabbing silver and bronze.
Downhill Skateboarder Adrien “Frenchy’ Paynel went quickest for his category, while Diego Poncelet and the young rider Andréas Bouclier filled out the next two positions.
Katerina Hill took the top spot for women’s Downhill Skateboarding, followed by Selina Theiler and Lisa Peters.
The main event took place on Saturday.
Racers who successfully qualified for the race competed head to head, in heats of four with the top two riders from each heat advancing from one round to the next.
After a day of extremely close racing, the results were in.
In men’s Downhill Skateboarding, Harry Clarke took gold, Bouclier silver, and Paynel gold.
In the women’s category, Selina Theiler pulled off first place.
Katerina Hill took second place with Lisa Peters in third.
All of the racing was incredibly tight, including many of the early rounds.
One heat of the men’s semi finals even required a photo finish to determine the position between Owen Fox and Maurilo Medeiros for second place in the heat, behind Bouclier.
The position was ultimately awarded to Medeiros, who would advance to the finals alongside Bouclier.
This is certainly a race worth re-watching, so feat your eyes below on our coverage from World Skate!
