Where Winter Feels Like Summer – Lanzarote Becomes the World’s Running Capital this December

Lanzarote, Canary Islands – On December 6, 2025, the shores of Lanzarote will transform into a vibrant stage for one of Europe’s most unique sporting events. The Font Vella Lanzarote International Marathon is preparing to welcome its largest-ever field of athletes, not just to a start line, but to a paradise that defies the European winter.

While the rest of the continent bundles up against the cold, thousands of runners are descending on the Canary Islands for a very different experience: a race run under blue skies, with an average temperature of 21°C, accompanied by the sound of the Atlantic Ocean.

A Course Carved by Volcanic Beauty

More than just a competition, this marathon is a scenic tour of the island’s stunning east coast. The route winds through the municipalities of Costa Teguise, Arrecife, San Bartolomé, and Puerto del Carmen, offering participants a rhythmic journey alongside turquoise waters and dramatic volcanic landscapes.

“It’s the ‘Run-cation’ effect,” organizers explain. “Athletes aren’t just coming here for a medal; they are coming for the feeling of the sun on their backs in December. They are trading grey pavements for a panoramic coastal avenue that is as beautiful as it is fast.”

A Global Community United by Sport

The event has evolved into a true melting pot of cultures. This year, the start line will feature flags from 57 different nations, turning the race into a global celebration.

From the large contingents arriving from the UK, Ireland, France, and Germany, to the strong local Spanish community, the atmosphere in Lanzarote is one of shared passion. Whether chasing a personal best in the full Marathon—which has seen a surge in popularity this year—or enjoying the 10k and Half Marathon, runners are united by the unique energy that only a destination race can provide.

Running for Everyone

The spirit of the Lanzarote International Marathon is defined by inclusivity. It is a festival where elite athletes run on the same course as first-timers, families, and those seeking a fresh start.

In a powerful demonstration of sport as a tool for social reintegration, the event will once again welcome participants from the Tahíche Penitentiary Center. Running alongside staff and the general public in the 10k category, these athletes remind us that the road offers everyone a chance for discipline, motivation, and personal growth.

With the energy building and the island preparing to host its most vibrant sporting weekend yet, the message is clear: The finish line is just the beginning of the experience.

You can follow the race live on YouTube, starting on the 6th of December at 8am (GMT+0), and you can check the schedule in the following link: Race Shedule.
