Tennis Red Bull Bassline 2023 Vienna
Germany’s Alexander Zverev wins the fourth edition of the Red Bull Bassline tournament in Vienna by adapting best to the entertaining tiebreak format.
Zverev and Austria´s Dominic Thiem won their two group matches, each with three players, and advanced to the final. They did so despite strong competition from Andrey Rublev (world No. 5), Frances Tiafoe (world No. 14) and Hungary’s Fabian Maroszan (No. 65). The German Olympic champion put in an outstanding performance in the group stage and did not concede a tiebreak against Tiafoe or Marozsan. In the final, which was played in a best-of-five format, Zverev again sent the crowd into raptures with incredible shots and defeated Thiem in a rematch of the 2020 US Open final with a score of 5:1, 5:0, 3:5, and 5:4.
A special highlight was the first appearance of Andrey Rublev (RUS). In honor of his 26th birthday, the crowd, led by Thiem, sang a birthday song before the match began.
