Predicting the fates of every major character in “The Boys” season finale

Warning: This post contains major spoilers for “The Boys” Season Five.

Amazon Prime’s hit show, “The Boys”, is wrapping up after five seasons. The finale will be released in 4DX theatres on May 19 and on Amazon Prime on May 20.

The show follows the plot of a group of black-ops people called “The Boys” who try to stop corrupt superheroes (called “Supes) from “taking” over the world. As the seasons go on, more superheroes gradually try to join the fight to take out Homelander, a corrupt version of Superman who’s the most powerful and evil Supe in the world.

The finale has a lot to wrap up. Homelander has to fight Billy Butcher, who’s the leader of “The Boys”. Kimiko (The Female), a superhero with regenerative abilities, also gained the powers of Soldier Boy, who can generate a blast so powerful it disables the powers of other Supes (thank you, Frenchie).

Starlight and Hughie Campbell may play an important role in the battle, and there are other potentially interesting stories for Ashley Barrett, Ryan Butcher, and Mother’s Milk that the finale could resolve.

If there’s one thing this show has taught us, it’s that it’s not afraid to kill off important characters. The show is gory and dark, and there are times where it can feel utterly hopeless for the main characters. There have already been a lot of important deaths (A-Train, Frenchie), but the finale could bring more.

Soldier Boy: Alive

This is an obvious one. Soldier Boy has the first strand of Compound V in his bloodstream, which makes him immortal, something viewers found out in season five, episode three. The only way Soldier Boy can die is through suicide, like Stormfront did in season three.

If viewers needed any more reason to believe Soldier Boy would be alive by the finale, showrunner Eric Kripke confirmed that season five, episode seven would be the last appearance Soldier Boy has in the show. In the middle of the episode, Homelander stops him from abandoning him by knocking him out and cryogenically freezing him. We’ll see more of his character in “Vought Rising” and in a potential spinoff, but Soldier Boy will remain alive by the end of the show.

Hughie/Starlight: Alive

I’m lumping these two together because they’re probably going to stay alive for the same reason. Hughie Campbell and Annie January (Starlight) serve as the only beacons of hope in the show, and I don’t see the showrunners killing them off in the finale.

Some could argue that Hughie could die by Homelander’s hand as a way to push Billy Butcher over the edge, but I believe he already has enough motivation to kill Homelander. Starlight, meanwhile might have some more to her character arc, and she could have a bigger role in the fight.

She has been hinted at as the most purely good superhero, convincing formerly corrupt superheroes like Queen Maeve and A-Train to follow her cause. She has a lot of people (Starlighters) behind her.

However, I don’t think she’s shown the depth of her powers. The most powerful Supe she’s fought and won against is Dogknott. She also won against A-Train in season one, but only due to his heart condition flaring up. I think she could have a bigger role in the battle, but either way, I don’t think either she or Hughie dies at the end.

Ashley Barrett: Alive

Ashley Barrett’s character has evolved steadily throughout the seasons. Colby Minifie has done well at giving more depth to Ashley than just the overworked human in a senior position trying to manage Supes.

However, something about Ashley’s character remained the same for a while: she somehow survived everything. It’s something she herself referenced in episode seven of season five, and even with her new psychic voice powers not being super useful in combat, she’s stayed alive through being useful in management.

There’s a chance that could change in the finale. With her psychic voice (Bashley) shutting off in episode seven, the writers could be hinting at her rebelling against Homelander. That usually results in death, but somehow, I think Ashley will stay alive at the end, like she always does.

Mother’s Milk: Alive

People assumed that Mother’s Milk would die in season five. The beginning of the season hinted at Mother’s Milk getting the axe too, with him getting a death wish similar to Billy Butcher.

Even the title of episode seven, “The Frenchman, the Female, and the Man Called Mother’s Milk,” hints at his death. All three of those characters die in the comics, so the thought was that all three of them were on the chopping block. However, it ended up being just Frenchie.

As a result, I don’t think Mother’s Milk gets killed off. More likely, he gets the will to live again and starts a new life with his family, either in the U.S. or somewhere else.

Ryan: Alive

Ryan has been underutilized this season. Despite being elevated to main character status by season 4, he’s only appeared in one episode of season 5. He plays a meaningful role in that episode, with him going against Homelander and nearly getting beaten to death.

As a result, I don’t think the writers will kill off Ryan. They already showed us that Homelander is sadistic enough to nearly kill his own son, so I don’t see the point in them trying to use that storyline again. Plus, I think Ryan could take over as the new face of Vought. He’ll make a minor appearance, but nothing substantial.

Sister Sage: Alive

There’s hardly anyone in the show who has betrayed Homelander and lived to tell the tale. However, I think Sister Sage will be an exception.

She made a critical error in episode six of season five, predicting Soldier Boy wouldn’t give Homelander the V-One that would make him immortal (he did). However, Sister Sage has always been able to predict Homelander, and I think that somehow makes her shrewd enough to survive. She has her own bunker to survive in too.

Sage could be open for redemption this season, but I think a self-sacrifice would be too drastic for her. Instead, I see her leading the new Vought alongside Ashley.

The Deep: Deceased

The Deep, similar to Ashley, has somehow survived throughout the entire arc of the show. However, unlike Ashley, he is completely unlikable and pathetic.

He’s abandoned/killed all of his friends, to the point that the fish have proclaimed that if he enters any body of water, he is dead. Also, with Homelander disbanding the Seven, the Deep is useless to him as well.

As a result, I think one way or another, he gets killed off. Maybe Starlight kills him off, or maybe the virus kills him off, but fans have been clamoring for his head for a while, and I think they get their wish.

Kimiko: Deceased

Kimiko’s fate is also a coin flip, but fans are probably sure of one thing. She will be important in the fight between Butcher and Homelander.

She has the Soldier Boy ability of de-powering other superheroes. It’s a literal MacGuffin on her chest, and I think that she uses it to de-power Homelander in the fight. I think this ability saps her of her regenerative powers, too, and she also sacrifices herself in the fight.

There’s another world where Kimiko survives and moves to a place much further away in the epilogue. However, I think her reuniting with Frenchie would be a fitting way for her character arc to end. I’m not sure what her last words will be, though.

Oh Father: Deceased

Daveed Diggs’ character, Oh Father, has been a wonderfully detestable addition to the main cast. He essentially serves as the main prophet (and ally) to Homelander’s God complex. However, the facade has started to wear off, with Homelander demanding instant obedience, and Oh Father demanding a little more time.

Whether he goes against Homelander’s god complex or becomes an antagonist in the final fight, I think Oh Father gets killed off. New characters tend to get killed off in “The Boys” anyway (see Black Noir II).

Homelander: Deceased

As the main antagonist of the show, everything is shifting towards him suffering a pathetic, mortal death without his powers. However, there are only two situations that I could see him surviving.

The first is that he actually wins and goes scorched Earth, and we see his plan come to fruition. The second is that Homelander gets put into a horrible prison after he is depowered, which would be fitting.

However, I think the second way would be a weak way to go for the show. Too many people want to kill Homelander, and keeping him alive would just keep the looming threat of him coming back, since he could just inject Compound V again. I think someone knocks him out for good, either Billy Butcher, Kimiko, or someone else.

Billy Butcher: Deceased

This one is pretty self-explanatory. The show has been hinting at the death of Billy Butcher since season 3 in many different ways.

Butcher has a malignant tumor in his brain that he got from taking V24, a compound V formula that gives humans superpowers for 24 hours. He’s also had a death wish since his wife (Becca Butcher) died in Season 2.

He also wants to get in a fight with Homelander, and anyone who gets in a fight with Homelander usually dies. It seems like the show is wrapping up his character arc of stopping corrupt superheroes (for him, all superheroes) with this fight. I don’t see any world where he survives, and the way they write his death in the show will be very interesting.
