2025 IRONMAN Pro Series heads to Sunny Oceanside California for its first stop in North America

On April 5, over 100 of the world’s top professional triathletes will converge in Southern California to compete in the first stop of the 2025 IRONMAN Pro Series™ in North America at the Athletic Brewing IRONMAN® 70.3® Oceanside triathlon. This iconic early season race will once again pit some of the top talent in the sport against each other in the birthplace of triathlon. The Athletic Brewing IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside triathlon will offer a total prize purse of $50,000 USD, with the male and female winners each taking $7,500 USD home as well as 2,500 IRONMAN Pro Series points.

The Athletic Brewing IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside race has historically attracted some of the biggest names in the sport to produce thrilling races with unforgettable performances and 2025 is shaping up to be another race for the ages. With three qualifying slots per gender available for the 2025 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship triathlon in Marbella, Spain, the stakes are high as the performance-based world series rolls into its third event of the 2025 race season.
The round up
Bidding for a fourth title in a row in the ILCA 7, GBR’s Micky Beckett started well enough with a 3,1: “It was lovely day sailing, 16-17kts, a bit more than we expected. I got into it pretty quickly, the wind was going back and forwards a bit but it was so good to be back out there doing it all again. I made a couple of dumb mistakes – like not finding the leeward mark and sailed off in the wrong direction when I was winning – but I will try not to do that again!” said Beckett.

Kontides followed up his race win with a 15th as he sets into his sixth Olympic cycle, “I just love it. Most of all I love the fighting on the water. This is the first major championship after the Games and most people are here so I want to be here. The world championships are early this year and so most of us want to get good racing in before then to build confidence.”  

In the ILCA 6 fleet it is Belgium’s 2021 World Champion Emma Plasschaert,  7th at Paris 2024, who leads after posting two wins: “I am pretty fresh. I had a eight months out of the boat, enjoying doing other things and so I am just off ten days training in Vilamoura before coming here. The second race was trickiest as the thermal effect meant it died completely and I was leading by a lot and then suddenly everyone was up with me and I only just got across the line to win!”

Simon Diesch and Anna Markfort, a disappointing 14th at Paris 2024, head the big German contingent in the Mixed 470 and lead overall after Day 1. The young French pair Lucas Rual and Emile Amoros top the 49er fleet after two races whilst in the FX Freya Black and Saskia Tidey made the best start also leading after two heats.

Australia’s recently crowned Olympic silver medallist Grae Morris is top of the iQFOiL men whilst GBR’s bronze winner Emma Wilson started characteristically strongly with two race wins in the Women. After three races China’s Huangcheng Zhao and Su Sha lead the Nacra 17s which raced in the afternoon’s lighter breezes.

The 54 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca by FERGUS Hotels is jointly organised by the Club Nàutic S’Arenal, the Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, the Real Club Náutico de Palma, the Real Federación Española de Vela and the Federación Balear de Vela, with the support of World Sailing, and is co-financed by the Govern de les Illes Balears’ Sustainable Tourism Tax fund.

A men’s field packed with firepower will see reigning IRONMAN® World Champion Patrick Lange (DEU) look to kick off his season with a good result when he returns to Oceanside hoping to better his 17th place finish in 2024. Also kicking off their season and bringing World Championship accolades to SoCal are Norwegian duo Gustav Iden, 2022 IRONMAN World Champion, and Kristian Blummenfelt, 2021 IRONMAN World Champion, both making their debuts in Oceanside.

Reigning Athletic Brewing IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside champion Lionel Sanders (CAN) will wear the number one bib as he returns to California to defend his title. The perennial favourite will look to add to his three wins in Oceanside (2024, 2017, 2016) and get his season off to a flying start. Two-time IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside champion (2021, 2019) and two-time IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship runner-up Ben Kanute (USA) also returns to the start line aiming for another podium finish.

Other top contenders kicking off their seasons include 2024 IRONMAN World Championship® podium finisher Rudy von Berg (USA), who typically performs well in Oceanside, finishing in the top five in all three previous appearances and the five-time IRONMAN winner Chris Leiferman (USA).

On the women’s side, 2024 IRONMAN Pro Series runner up Jackie Hering (USA) will be returning to Oceanside for the first time since her fifth-place finish in 2022. Another front runner will be 2022 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship second place finisher Paula Findlay (CAN) who will take to the start line in Oceanside for the seventh time. Findlay has never finished lower than sixth at the event and captured the women’s title in a fall edition of Oceanside in 2021.  Five-time IRONMAN 70.3 winner Tamara Jewett (CAN) will also hope to replicate her previous success in this race, where in 2023 she secured an impressive win in Oceanside against a deep field.

Other challengers on the women’s side include 2024 IRONMAN Lake Placid champion Danielle Lewis (USA) who will be looking to repeat the success she achieved throughout the season in 2024 that saw her earn sixth place finish in the inaugural IRONMAN Pro Series, and Alice Alberts (USA) who carried her success in 2023 winning IRONMAN Lake Placid and IRONMAN Maryland, to a strong ninth place finish in the 2024 IRONMAN Pro Series.
